I’m not exaggerating when I say this is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever come across. Not only is it visually stunning – it’s full of the most gorgeous illustrations and one that I have proudly displayed on my coffee table – but the message it contains is totally heartwarming (and needed) too.
I came across it when I was having a hard time with depression and was feeling a bit lost, and it helped me immensely.
Inside the pages are the stories of four unlikely friends (a boy, a cake-loving mole, a fox and a horse) who share their most pressing questions and important life lessons after stumbling upon each other whilst trying to find their way home.
It does such a wonderful job of reminding the reader about the power of strong friendships when you’re going through something challenging. It’s a book full of kindness and love, and I tuck into its pages at least once a week.
I gift it a few times a year, and I’ve yet to hear of a single person who it’s not helped. Whether you’re eight or eighty, there’s a story in here that will resonate. A bookshelf essential.
Some sage advice from the mole:
Do you have a favourite saying?”, asked the boy.
– A boy and a cake-loving mole, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse
“Yes”, said the mole.
“What is it?”
“If at first, you don’t succeed, have some cake.”
“I see, does it work?”
“Every time.”
