Sherpa in Action – Miles MacInnes at MetaCompliance
1. The Terrain
When MetaCompliance entered a period of rapid growth, the business was already operating at pace. The leadership team was preparing the company for exit while continuing to scale the core business. At the same time, a German bolt-on acquisition was entering late-stage negotiations.
“The business was growing fast, and the senior team was stretched,” says Miles MacInnes, who joined MetaCompliance as a Sherpa during this period. “There was a real concern that post-merger integration would become a major distraction without additional senior capacity.”
The opportunity was clear, but so was the risk. Without additional leadership resource, integration could easily have pulled focus away from the core value creation plan at a critical moment.
What the business needed was not a traditional hire or a short-term advisor. It needed experienced, senior support that could step in immediately, operate across a broad and evolving brief, and be trusted to deliver without adding management overhead.
2. Establishing the Route
Miles joined MetaCompliance as a full-time, embedded Sherpa with a clear mandate: provide senior, hands-on support through a period of complexity and change.
“Because Sherpas are pre-vetted, inducted and sponsored by Tenzing, I was able to start delivering straight away,” he explains. “There wasn’t a long ramp-up period. The expectation was to get on with the work.”
His initial focus was to design and lead the post-merger integration for the German acquisition. Working closely with the CEO and CFO, Miles helped translate due diligence and investment priorities into a clear and executable integration plan, aligning teams across the business and setting the pace for delivery.
3. The Climb
From the outset, the Sherpa role was operational.
As integration progressed, Miles worked across multiple areas of the business, combining senior coordination with hands-on execution where capacity was constrained. This included supporting communications, operational alignment and leadership coordination across geographies.
“The role isn’t about producing a strategy deck,” Miles says. “It’s about rolling your sleeves up and doing whatever needs to be done to deliver value.”
By spending time on the ground with teams and maintaining close alignment with leadership, Sherpa support allowed the executive team to stay focused on growing the core business, confident that integration was being delivered at pace.
4. Progress made
The value of the Sherpa model became clear early.
“Within the first month, I was leading integration work on the ground while dialling into the weekly Sherpa call,” Miles recalls. “I remember commenting on how quickly I’d been able to start delivering meaningful work.”
There was no extended bedding-in period. Serious delivery was already underway, and momentum was building across teams.
While each Sherpa engagement looks different, the common thread was clear: immediate, practical impact in the moments that mattered most. The integration delivered against plan, hitting key early milestones while allowing the leadership team to maintain momentum in the core business.
Looking back, Miles sees the experience as a strong example of Sherpa at its best. “A Sherpa allows a business to scale through complexity without losing focus on growth,” he says. “It provides trusted senior capacity exactly when it’s needed.”
What does this show about the Sherpa?
Sherpa is sometimes mistaken for consultancy, or for a temporary extension of the investor team. In practice, it is neither..
Sherpas are experienced operators with a path towards senior leadership in portfolio companies. Their instinct is to deliver real value quickly, with a deep understanding of the constraints management teams operate under and the realities of scaling under PE ownership.
For MetaCompliance, Sherpa reduced execution risk at a critical moment. For Tenzing, it provided a fast, responsible way to deploy senior experience where it was most needed. And for the Sherpa, it offered intensive, real-world operating experience aligned to long-term leadership ambitions.
“It’s a very practical way of aligning the needs of the investor, the business and the individual,” Miles says. “When it works well, it works extremely well.”
