Atlantic Salmon Trust

Dedicated to preserving wild Atlantic salmon populations

Through scientific research and collaborative efforts, the Atlantic Salmon Trust (AST) identifies and addresses threats such as habitat degradation, climate change, and overfishing to ensure the long-term survival of salmon. Their initiatives include habitat restoration, such as improving riverbanks and eliminating migration barriers, as well as promoting sustainable land management. Additionally, the AST educates and raises awareness to foster stewardship for salmon conservation.

A grant supports research which will identify the reasons for the dramatic decline in salmon numbers, mitigate or remove these impacts, and improve management practices. It also helps to fund the day-to-day operation of the Trust – covering research work, staff and communication costs, funding educational events, and facilitating meetings with NGOs and policymakers, all of which allow the charity to continue the task of investigating the causes of, and solutions to, declining salmon numbers.

“Wild Atlantic salmon are a keystone species in crisis – now officially endangered in Great Britain. Engaging the next generation is of paramount importance if we are to save this iconic fish from extinction, along with the wider biodiversity and communities its presence supports. We were blown away by the enthusiasm and passion of the children who took part in the Thames Salmon School, as was the entire international audience who gathered to hear them speak at Wild Salmon Connections. It was a reminder to the world that we owe it to our children to protect, conserve and restore our rivers, coasts and seas.

We are enormously grateful to Tenzing’s Piton Trust for supporting this incredible initiative which has marked a vital effort to engage young people with conservation.”

“As an avid fisherwoman, my passion lies in the restoration of salmon and the preservation of their environment. Fly fishing has been a deeply profound experience for me, allowing me to connect with nature in a unique way. Tiggy Pettifer, the woman who taught me to fish serves as the Fundraising Officer for The Atlantic Salmon Trust.

Witnessing the decline of wild Atlantic salmon by a staggering 70% over the past 25 years, with populations in Great Britain now endangered, has ignited a sense of urgency within me.

I am driven to safeguard these magnificent creatures and the ecosystems they inhabit for generations to come. By supporting initiatives like The Atlantic Salmon Trust, we can work towards the conservation of these keystone species and the ecosystems they inhabit. My nomination stems from a desire to amplify awareness and support for this vital cause, ensuring that future generations can continue to experience the wonder of fly fishing and the beauty of our environment.”
